Summer Reading List Ideas for Your Kiddos

As a kid, if you love to read, then summer reading is one of the best parts of summer. You get to choose your own adventure and get lost in a good book without school work getting in the way. If your kiddo isn’t a big reader, then summer reading may be more like pulling teeth. Either way, a summer reading challenge will help your little ones keep their vocabulary and comprehension skills strong; which in turn makes going back to school that much easier. We love reading at Snip-its and know just how important a summer reading program can be. Here’s our list of great books and amazing programs which just may help put the fun back in summer reading!

Join a Summer Reading Program

Challenging kids to read and having a list of programs to join will keep them reading and interacting with other kids who are also reading. Plus, many offer a FREE book or other fun prizes!

Local Library – The librarians at your local library are book experts and they love picking out books your little one will love too. There’s usually a number of activities and groups at the library to entertain the most difficult of young readers. Many libraries have summer reading challenges on-line as well as in the library.
Book Stores – Most book stores, whether they are local independent sellers or national corporations, have themed reading programs and challenges. Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading Triathlon is once such program this summer.
Book Publishers – Publishing sites usually have well thought out and extensive on-line programs with book logs, tracking, discussions, new content from their authors, games and prizes. Check out Scholastic’s Summer Reading Program for starters!
