Winter Wardrobe Essentials

It’s cold out there, and your kiddos aren’t always willing to wear the warm garb they need to during the winter months. Style and function can work together when planning tiny tot winter wardrobes this season. Here’s a list of wardrobe essentials and the trends that will keep your kids’ warm clothes intact:

Extra Layering on the Top — Two trends sweeping playgrounds and classrooms this winter: bright colored hoodies and blanket sweaters guaranteed to keep little ones warm and toasty. Colors like spruce green, rust and plum purple are high on this season’s boys it list. Bold patterns and fun geometric shapes keep blanket sweaters in vogue for your little starlets.

Extra Layering on the Bottom — Children’s wardrobes in the winter get a lot of extra help with warm layers that can be added and taken off depending on the temperature. Layering on the bottom is just as important as a sweatshirt and coat on the top. Adapt hot styles like skinny jeans and leggings during winter to add an extra layer of protection—it’s easier to add snow pants, fleece pants or even a skirt or dress over these items. Add a pop of color by choosing leggings in this winter’s trend colors like raspberry, garnet and frosty peach.

Extra Cozy Feet — Add some fun and warmth with wool socks and boot socks. Fashion friendly socks in a variety of colors and prints are a great way for boys to get involved in their wardrobe choices this season. Think of boot socks as a reemergence of the 1980s leg warmer, often knitted and made of wool, these leg-wrapping cuffs can define your little girl’s personal style.

Pick Outerwear Your Little Ones Like — Coats, hats, mittens, scarves and boots are all essential for the winter months. Choose colors and styles your kids like.

  • Poufy coats, fur coats and longer wool pea coats are on trend this season. If your child is spending a lot of time outside, pick weather resistant coats that go down to at least the mid-thigh to retain the most heat.
  • Accent your little one’s winter ensemble with hats, mittens and scarves. Rich terracotta and oxide colors in earth tones are all popular and easy to find in the snow if playtime gets snowball fight rough.
  • Elbow length gloves and mittens can be layered, are on trend, and will stay on longer.
  • For more staying power, choose a hat with earflaps or one that fastens with Velcro. Hats that tie under the chin cause more of a choking hazard than Velcro, which secures but also comes apart easily.

A great winter tip: Kids tend to lose the outerwear accessories—make sure you have multiples on hand.
