Back to school season is here! But first, August is Family Fun Month. Family fun-time is something we love to celebrate. Here’s a list of our favorites from Pinterest. You can have family fun-time anytime, but these 8 seemed like a great way to say, “Buh-bye” to summer and, “Hello” to fall—with its slightly more regimented family calendar.
1. STAYING UP LATE, CAMPING IN THE BACKYARD AND STARGAZING IN A PADDLING POOL
This Pin takes it up a notch with this great idea to just put a blow-up pool in the backyard and fill it up with all the pillows and blankets you can find. Of course, you’ll want to tell not-so-scary ghost stories and roast marshmallows too!
2. LET’S GO FLY A KITE
On the beach or in the park, family kite flying sessions are full of exercise, camaraderie, patience and a double dose of FUN. It’s just really hard not to smile while there’s a soaring kite in the air.
3. ZOO SCAVENGER HUNT
Going to the zoo is fun, why not make it more fun with a scavenger hunt? Keep your little one’s interested and moving with any number of free and printable scavenger hunt options on Pinterest.
4. PLAYGROUND HOPPING
Every kiddo wants to go to the park, so why not take them to multiple parks in one afternoon? Go to Pinterest for checklists of family activities and tasks to complete at each park before heading to the next. Or, just wing it and enjoy your time together.
5. FAMILY PAINT NIGHT
Even if you aren’t an artist, this is super entertaining. Go to a craft store and grab a bunch of paint by numbers; pick up some leaves in the yard and paint around them; or find the dozens of kid-friendly painting ideas on Pinterest and try your favorite. Display everyone’s paintings and host your own family art exhibit—complete with appetizers and finger food served on fancy napkins. Each artist gets to make up something extremely silly about their piece for extra giggles.
6. MINIATURE GOLF TOURNAMENT
If you don’t have a mini golf course near you, you can make your own in the backyard. Check out Pinterest for DIY ideas.
7. MOVIE NIGHT…IN MOM & DAD’S ROOM
Changing the location of family movie night is about as simple as it gets; but oh, the memories you’ll make! Whatever has step by step instructions—our favorites are the invite taped to the door and the required pajamas!
8. FAMILY BOOK CLUB
Now this is a family activity they will remember forever. Go all out. Pick a favorite book or story and recreate it: serve dinner choices from the book, dress up as a favorite character or just in the theme of the book and decorate the house as a location from the book. Don’t forget to read or talk about the book as a family; discuss favorite parts or act-out/recite favorite scenes. So much fun!
What’s your favorite family fun-time activity or idea? We’re always looking for ways to make and share all those family memories. Your kiddos will be talking about these last summer moments for a long time to come. Happy Family Fun Month and happy back to school season!
