Snip-its (www.snipits.com) children's hair salon franchise opened its 60th location Oct. 18 in Douglasville.

The 1,400-square-foot Snip-its Douglasville is at the Chapel Hill Centre, 2985 Chapel Hill Road, close to Interstate 20. It features five cutting stations and a party room for themed birthday parties and celebrations.

"The first time I walked into a Snip-its, I was blown away," said Snip-its Douglasville owner Debbie Weaver. "Every child was treated as an individual and celebrated for her own personality. It was a unique experience."

Each Snip-its offers kids a no-tears and fun haircut experience inside a salon full of vibrant colors and cartoon characters - Snips, Clip-ette Sisters, Curly Comb, Flyer Joe Dryer and Maranga Mirror - plus animated gadgets, salon-tailored computer games, and a cushy parents chair at every styling station.

"My 12-year-old daughter encouraged me to open a Snip-its," Ms. Weaver said. "She knew I was looking to do something new beyond my electronics degree. I wanted to do something fun that made kids feel special, and Snip-its reflects that."

A ribbon-cutting event with coupon giveaways is slated for Nov. 8.

The salon marks a milestone for the company that was started by first-time entrepreneur Joanna Meiseles in 1995, after a heartbreaking salon visit with her then young son.

Since last year, Snip-its lowered its initial investment to start a franchisee salon to under $200,000, to become more attractive to the many customers who love the Snip-its concept.

"Like me, many of our franchisees were formerly working or stay-at-home moms that were business savvy and were looking for businesses that made a difference in the community," said Ms. Meiseles.

According to the Center for Women's Business Research in Washington, D.C., 10.4 million U.S. firms were owned by women in 2006, and 69 percent of those firms were service-related.

"Our expansion into Douglasville further solidifies that parents are eager to give their kids the best in specialized services, including fun haircuts in a comfortable place that children can call their own," Ms. Meiseles said.
